I have the great pleasure of working with Prosumers International, which my partner and I founded in 2002. We are a peer developed, peer lead, and peer run program in Texas. Having started in San Antonio, we also have programs in McKinney, Plano, Denton, Houston, and McAllen, Texas. Our work is designed to dare people to dream again and equip them with the tools to achieve their dreams. Although we came out of the mental health arena, everyone is welcome as labels are not used in our program. Our philosophy is that everyone is "recovering" from something. If we have lived long enough something happened to alter the course of our lives and we all have to deal with circumstances and issues that can push us off course. We also represent the voice of people with lived experience of mental health issues at the legislative level in Texas.
Additionally, I co-own PRO International with my partner, Janet Paleo. We are a consulting and training firm and refer to ourselves as empowerment specialists. Our flagship program is Focus for Life, a three day recovery and resiliency workshop that has supported many of the participants to regain their own power and claim wellness and move forward in their growth.
I first heard of Personal Medicine when Pat spoke about it at an Alternatives Conference around 2006 or 2007. As part of our work with PRO International, we filmed the Alternatives Conference Keynotes every year. I was struck by the power of Personal Medicine as a way of conceptualizing our innate ability to heal when given a safe space and supportive connections. I wanted everyone to know that healing is possible and that we can create our own medicine.
